Gettysburg Battlefields

gettysburgThis area is best knows for the famous battle that took place between July 1 and 3, 1863 which to this day is the bloodiest battle ever on American soil. History buffs come from all over to get a feel for what happened here.  But casual visitors come here too for the history of the Gettysburg battlefields which played a role in the Civil War. Seminary Ridge was an important location through the entire battle and became headquarters for General Lee for the time he was there. Today a likeness of the General on horseback resides in the Virginia Memorial.

The Valley of Death and the Devil’s Den is where General Longstreet and General Hood’s divisions were involved on July 2nd for a large part of the fighting.  One of the more remembered battlefields from the Civil War was Little Round Top where Lieutenant Chamberlain’s troops showed up in time to defend the hill form Confederate soldiers who wanted the higher ground. Throughout the three day battle, Cemetery Ridge was the centre of the Union army.  Pickett’s Charge took place here and today a memorial now stands there. This is not luxury travel but is a historical tour.
