Mammoth Cave National Park
Mammoth Cave is the largest known cave in the world and is located within Mammoth Cave National Park in central Kentucky. It has been determined that if the second and third largest caves in the world were combined, they still would not equal the magnitude of Mammoth Cave, and Mammoth Cave would still have over 100 miles left over.
Because Mammoth Cave is so large, there is a lot to visit, not just in the cave but also in the surrounding park as well. Visiting Mammoth Cave will provide fun and enjoyment for the entire family, as they will not only be exploring but they will be learning more about American history. Mammoth Cave developed in thick Mississippian-aged limestone strata, while being covered in a layer of sandstone. The combination of these two types of rock makes the structure incredibly stable, so there should be no worry while exploring the inside of the cave. Inside the cave there is over 390 miles of passageway that can be explored by visitors. With that, there are also new discoveries of passageways every year so the cave continues to grow. The cave was established as a park in order to preserve the cave system and ensure it can be enjoyed by all for many years to come.
The National Park Service offers a variety of cave tours to visitors and tourists. There are many features of the cave that are favorites by visitors, including the Grand Avenue, Frozen Niagara, and Fat Man’s Misery. These spectacles can be seen on lighted tours that range from one to six hours long. There are also tours for those who want to get away from the electric lit tours and visitors are allowed to carry paraffin lamps and explore the caves. There are also tours designed for the avid spelunker in which the muddy crawl spaces and dusty tunnels off the beaten path are explored. Being the biggest cave system in the world, Mammoth Caves is almost impossible to completely explore in one trip. Whether following the guides and learning more about the history of the cave is your interest or going off on your own and finding new and exciting places is more your taste, there is something for everyone to explore at Mammoth Caves National Park.
