Lanzarote is the fourth largest of the Canary Islands. The Spanish owned archipelago which is located off the coast of Morocco. On a similar line of latitude to parts of Florida and Mexico.

This privileged position creates a climate that is highly clement all year round.
Characterised by very low rainfall and temperatures which average out at around 20 Celsius. Creating the ideal preconditions for a holiday destination.

Package holidays first started to take off here in the 1970´s – and today around 2 million tourists visit the island every year. The bulk of them from the Spanish mainland, the UK, Eire and Germany. With accommodation concentrated in the three main resorts of Puerto del Carmen, Playa Blanca and Costa Teguise.

Lanzarote offers visitors much more than just reliable sunshine alone though. The island boast over ninety beaches, spectacular volcanic scenery and a wealth of visitor attractions created by a local artist called Cesar Manrique. Along with a number of picturesque villages and towns – such as Haria in the Valley of 1000 Palms. Where locals once planted a palm tree for every new born baby. And Teguise – the former island capital – which is home to a host of historic buildings dating back as far as 1455.

The islands most famous attraction is the Timanfaya National Park – which was created by a series of massive volcanic eruptions during the 18th and 19th centuries. These decimated much of the south of Lanzarote – carpeting formerly rich agricultural land in lava. Today though this lunar like terrain attracts over 900,000 tourists every year. Whilst Apollo 13 astronauts were even shown pictures of the region in order to prepare themselves for their lunar landings.

Elsewhere on the island a local artist called César Manrique fused this volcanic terrain with his own imagination in order to create unique visitor attractions. Such as the Mraidor Del Rio – an amazing look out pint which gives visitors a birds’ eye view of the small neighbouring island of La Graciosa.

Holidays in Lanzarote are offered by leading UK tour operators such as Thompsons and First Choice. And the island is just four hours flying time from all major British airports. The best time of the year to visit is usually September or October – as the crowds have dissipated but the weather sill remains excellent. Whilst the Trade Winds that buffet the island have largely subsided.
