Things to Do and See around the Giants Causeway

The Giants Causeway is an ancient volcanic rock formation on the coast of County Antrim in Northern Ireland. Legend has it that it was the walkway of mythical giants between Ireland and Scotland, hence its name.

The northern Antrim coast is a region of unparalleled beauty. A visitor can fill days simply walking or hiking its rough terrain while enjoying its natural splendor. Though strong rip currents make Whitepark Bay beach dangerous for all but the strongest, most experienced swimmers, a stroll along the beach offers sweeping vistas of the bay.

For the daring, Carrick-a-Rede Rope Bridge, which connects the mainland to Carrick Island, will provide an adventure. Today a tourist attraction, it was originally a working footbridge for salmon fisherman in the area. Transversing a deep chasm, it affords stunning views as far as the Scottish coast. A tea room is located on the grounds.

For photographers, this area offers many unique scenic settings, including a stretch of Bregagh Road near the village of Armoy, called the Dark Hedges locally, where 300 year old beech trees form an intertwined canopy which provides unusual lights and angles.

History lovers can visit historic castles and houses. These include the ruins of the ancient Dunseverick Castle, a site associated with St. Patrick. Also in the area is the 14th century Dunluce Castle, where guided tours are available by appointment. The remains of 18th century Downhill House, and its accessory building Mussenden Temple, modeled on the Temple of Vesta in Italy, are near the seaside village of Castle Rock.

In the village of Bushmills, tours are given at the Old Bushmills Distillery. Visitors can see how Irish whiskey has been made there since 1608, and can enjoy tastings.

Sports enthusiasts will discover much in the area to match their interests. Fishermen will find salmon, trout and other catch in abundance in the sea, rivers and lakes. There are world-class golf courses at the Royal Portrush and Portstewart Clubs. They provide challenging golf experiences along with panoramic views. Visitors are welcome on the courses. from Lesley at www.allpro.com
